I not only hike, camp and fish the Olympics, being raised in a hunting family, I enjoy hunting.
The national park is closed to all hunting and carring fire arms, however the national forest is open to hunting during the season.
In times past hunting on the national forest land in and around Quilcene and Brinnon was the most productive in the state. The shuttting down of clear cutting on national forest has decreased food sources and moved the animals to private land.
There are a few animals left on national forest land but your best bet is to gain permission and hunt private lands in and around good food sources such as clear cutts.
Our hunting remains good for deer, bear and cougar. Elk populations on the peninsula are in a building phase with a few acceptions.
The Brinnon elk herd numbers are down and as of this fall I spotted only one legal bull, state reqiures 3 points on one side. Hunting this herd is by draw only, and since private land is there favorite hang out, talk to land owners. You well find mixed emotions, some want them hunted and others want them left alone. My advise as a hunter don't get caught in the middle of that conflict.
